Ottewell (vocals, guitar), Tom Gray (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Paul Blackburn (bass, guitar), Olly Peacock (drums), and Ian Ball (vocals, guitar, harmonica). The band started recording demos in Peacock's father's bathroom in Southport soon after. An epic bidding war erupted when they sent the demos to recording labels, with the band finally signing with Virgin Records' subsidiary, Hut, in 1997. In 1998, their debut release, Bring it On, was a critical success and led the bad to garner the coveted Mercury Prize for best new album. The band's second album, Liquid Skin, was released in 1999, lending Gomez further success on the British and Australian album charts, as well as making the Billboard Heatseeker chart in the US for the first time. It was followed by 2000's rarities and B-sides compilation Abandoned Shopping Trolley Hotline. The group's third album, In Our Gun, was released in 2002. It made the top 10 on the United Kingdom charts as well as the top 50 on the Australian charts. While Gomez's first three albums had been self-produced, the band tapped Tchad Blake, who had previously produced album by Crowded House and Pearl Jam, to produce their fourth album. The result was the critically lauded Split the Difference, which was released in May 2004. The album reached the top 40 in the UK and Australia. The first single "Catch Me Up" entered the UK top 40 in March 2004, bringing Gomez a measure of commercial success as well.



Despite the acclaim, Gomez was dropped from their long-time label, Virgin, in 2005, and wound up signing with Dave Matthews' ATO Records. Under a new label, the band released their first live album, Out West in June 2005. Gomez then began an extensive period of touring to raise their profile in the US. Their next album, How We Operate, was released in May 2006. Several of the album's cults were used by American television series ranging from "Grey's Anatomy" to "House." By the time they released their next album, Five Men in a Hut, they had built a healthy international following.
