Moby music biography continued...
Hall on September 11, 1965 in Harlem, New York, Moby took his stage name from the work of his great great great uncle, Herman Melville. He grew up in Darien, Connecticut, where, while in high school, he formed his first band, the Vatican Commandos, a hardcore punk outfit for which he played guitar. After dropping out of college (where he studied religion and philosophy), he moved back to New York and started hanging out in dance clubs and DJing. By 1990, he had released some singles and EPs for the underground dance label Instinct, which in turn led to some remix projects and his own record deal with Elektra in 1995. Moby's first album for Elektra was Everything Is Wrong and though hit was a critical success in techno circles, it failed commercially. The following year, Moby suddenly abandoned techno to record heavy guitar rock for Animal Rights, which received mixed reviews. He then made a partial return to electronica on1997's I Like to Score. Moby's big breakout success was 1999's Play, party-pleaser that also ingeniously pushed musical boundaries with its combinations of electronica and old blues and gospel recordings, Moby managed to capture both critical acclaim (two Grammy nominations and top honors in the 1999 Village Voice critics poll) and legions of new fans (the album went double platinum in 2000 and sold more than 3 million copies worldwide). Suddenly, Moby's music was heard in countless movie trailers, TV shows, and commercials, while the man himself became an unlikely poster boy for Calvin Klein. Moby had finally arrived.
In 2002 Moby released the follow up to Play, 18, which earned gold and platinum awards in over 30 countries, and sold more than four million copies. Moby toured extensively for both Play and 18, playing well over 500 shows in the course of four years. 18 was followed by Hotel (2005) and Last Night (2008), which were also critical and commercial successes. Though Moby is active in a number of social causes, it is clear that his number one cause is moving people onto the dance floor.
